Getting Started with Scrapbooking

When you’re looking for a more creative way to display and share your photos with family and friends, consider scrapbooking. Even though it takes a little more effort and creativity than simply placing photos in a traditional album, the end results are by far more beautiful and expressive of the adventures and memories that the pictures portray.

You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to be able to scrapbook. In fact, people who’ve never done a craft project on their own dive right into scrapbooking because it’s easy and most of all, fun. Here are a few tips you can follow when getting started with scrapbooking.

Plan Ahead of Time

Scrapbooking takes planning even if you’re just randomly pasting photos on the pages of your scrapbook. You still have to decide on the photos you’re going to use, the decorations you’re going to incorporate and other design elements. Many people choose to do display their photos in a more sequential manner.
Others arrange their photos in a way that tells a story of the event. So before you start doing, make sure you have a plan to help you minimize errors and to act as a guide so as you don’t leave anything out.

Get Ideas from other Resources

Again, you don’t have to be as creative and as knowledgeable as the “Queen of Crafts” (whoever that may be in your book) when it comes to scrapbooking. Even if you’re artistic abilities are limited there are plenty of online resources and books that will help guide you along. Scrapbooking books can give you plenty of instructions on how to execute your ideal page layouts and craft websites are filled with inspirations and great ideas that you can use.

Theme Your Scrapbooks

  • Another great way to keep all your décor, photos and designs in your scrapbook coordinating and complementing each other is to have a theme. Themes can be made up of colors, animals, the type of celebration such as weddings or birthday parties, or even patterns like polka dots. Decide on a theme that will go well with the subject of your photographs.
  • This will also help you to be more decisive on design elements and embellishments since we all know how overwhelming the selections are when it comes to scrapbooking materials like papers and stickers.

Buy the Supplies You Need

Before beginning any project, you should always make sure you have everything you need to complete the tasks. This includes supplies such as scissors, crayons, markers, glue, tape, and the like. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to stop midway through your scrapbook because you don’t have any glue or tape in able to stick your pictures on the pages.

Always Reuse and Recycle Materials

There’s no doubt you’ll have a ton of left over supplies once you’ve completed your scrapbook. Scraps from cut up pattern paper, unused stickers, extra ribbons and the like can all be recycled and reused for future projects. Keep a separate box for all your scraps so that they can be accessible next time you start on another scrapbook. Waste not, want not, and spend less by reusing and recycling materials.
